Bio
Darren Van Hofwegen joined the TVCC Track & Field staff in the fall of 2024. Van Hofwegen brings a wealth of track and field experience with over a decade of coaching experience at the high school level.
Van Hofwegen began his coaching career at Hagerman High School in Hagerman, ID with the task of rebuilding a men's and women's track program through the middle school and high school. In the third year of rebuild, the men's and women's programs were Snake River Conference Champions and Snake River Conference Runners-Up, respectively.
This experience brought him to Lighthouse Christian in Twin Falls, ID. In his first year at the helm, Lighthouse Christian won an IHSAA Men's State Championship, District IV Championship, and Northside Conference Championship. During his 3 years with the program, Lighthouse athletes amassed 16 individual state champions and over 20 school records. Van Hofwegen coached a 3x State High Jump Champion and multiple Long Jump and Triple Jump Champions. Individual sprinters often thrived under his guidance with state champions in the 100m, 200m, 110mH, and 300mH. His relays also were dominant in that time frame with multiple conference, district, and state champions in the 4x100m, 4x200m, and medley relays.
After Lighthouse Christian, he took a break from coaching Track and Field to concentrate on building a basketball program at Canyon Ridge High School in Twin Falls, ID, but he focused his efforts to help train all athletes in the Strength & Conditioning program as a Twin Falls School District Physical Education Department Chair.
Most recently, Van Hofwegen relocated to Fruitland, ID where he found his love for coaching track & field again as a volunteer jumps coach at Fruitland High School in 2023. During the 2023 season coaching alongside Coach Mike Greif, Fruitland won state championships in men's and women's long jump.
Overall, in 10 years of coaching, Van Hofwegen has helped men and women earn 54 Conference Champions, 19 State Champions, 38 School Records, 6 Team Conference Championships, 2 IHSAA 4th Place Team Finishes, 2015 IHSAA State Track & Field Runner-Up, and 2014 IHSAA Men's Track & Field Champions. He is a 3x Northside Conference Coach of the Year, 2x Southside Conference Coach of the Year, and 2014 Idaho State Coach of the Year.
Van Hofwegen earned his undergraduate degree from Boise State University in Kinesiology—Physical Education and earned a master's degree in athletic administration from Concordia—Irvine. He resides in Fruitland with his wife, Angela, and their 3 children Bailey, Zeke, and Asher.
