Chukar Women Win at Home, Third Victory in a Row
[Ontario, OR] - The Treasure Valley Community College Women's Basketball team earned their first home win on Friday night, despite getting off to a slow start. The Pierce Raiders out of Lakewood, WA made the trip to Ontario to battle with the Chukars. Knotted at 16 after the first quarter, the Chukars fed off their defense, only allowing six points in the second quarter, and posted 22 points of their own to take a 36-20 lead at the intermission. Freshman Lilly Mallory helped propel TVCC to the 16-point advantage, as she went 4-6 from the field, scoring 10 of her 16 points in the second period. Sophomore Zoe Archibald was also a factor, going 3-3 from the field, and scoring seven of her 11 points in the second quarter.
In the second half, the Chukars maintained their defensive pressure, grabbing 11 of their 21 steals in the game. Sophia Legate, the reigning NWAC Athlete of the Week for women's basketball, led the Chukars with 23 total points and eight rebounds. In addition to the double-figure scoring from Mallory and Archibald, Ava Cuff put up 11 points, and Maggie Sharp added a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double. Sharp also dished out a game-high seven assists. Ashten Moore grabbed nine rebounds. As a team, the Chukars shot 37.5% from the field, and 35.7% from downtown in the 85-45 victory. The Chukars took care of the ball, only turning it over 12 times.
Treasure Valley women will head to Twin Falls, ID to participate in the Wright Physical Therapy Shootout hosted by College of Southern Idaho. They will face two NJCAA teams in Columbia State Community College (TN) on Friday at 1:00pm MST, and Northeastern Junior College (CO) on Saturday at 1:00pm MST.
